THERE IS NO CURRENT REPAIR ORDER ON THIS VEHICLE ACCORDING TO THE ADVISOR. THEY PRINTED OFF THE PREVIOUS REPAIR ORDER WHEN THE OIL CHANGE WAS DONE.

Failed Components and Extent of Damage
TECH STARTED VEHICLE AND INSPECTOR VERIFIED THAT THERE IS A LOUD NOISE FROM THE BOTTOM OF ENGINE THAT SOUNDED ROTATIONAL AND LASTED UNTIL THE ENGINE WAS TURNED OFF.
TECH REMOVED THE OIL FILL CAP AND INSPECTOR NOTED THAT THE INSIDE OF THE VALVE COVER AREA SHOWS SIGNS OF BUILD UP AND THE METAL OF THE CYLINDER HEAD IS A DARK PURPLE/BROWN COLOR. NO OBVIOUS SLUDGE SEEN. THE ENGINE OIL SHOWS TO BE APPROXIMATELY ONE QUART OVER FULL AND THE OIL IS VERY DARK. THE TECH STATED THAT THE CUSTOMER CLAIMS TO HAVE PUT FOUR QUARTS OF OIL IN THE VEHICLE VERY RECENTLY. INSPECTOR CANNOT VERIFY THIS, BUT CAN SAY THAT THE OIL IS EXTREMELY DARK FOR HAVING THAT MUCH ADDED RECENTLY. ACCORDING TO THE SPECS AT THE SHOP, THIS ENGINE NEEDS 5.1 QUARTS DURING AN OIL CHANGE.
THERE ARE TWO OIL CHANGE STICKERS IN THE WINDSHIELD. ONE IS FROM JIFFY LUBE AND THE OTHER IS A PREVIOUS STICKER FROM WALMART THAT INDICATES THE "NEXT OIL CHANGE" WAS DUE AT 169897 MILES.
RACKED VEHICLE AND INSPECTOR NOTED THAT THERE IS A LONG TERM OIL LEAK FROM THE REAR MAIN SEAL AREA. THERE IS DIRT AND DEBRIS STUCK TO THE WET OIL COMING FROM THE ENGINE. THERE IS ALSO BLOW BACK ONTO THE SUB FRAME JUST BEHIND THE ENGINE. INSPECTOR ALSO NOTED THAT THERE IS BUILD UP OF OIL RESIDUE ON THE UNDERCOVER FOR THE ENGINE. INSPECTOR ALSO NOTED THAT THERE IS A NEW(ISH) DRAIN PLUG IN THE ENGINE OIL PAN THAT HAS AN UNBROKEN SEAL ON IT AND THERE IS OIL ON THE SUBFRAME BEHIND THAT, INDICATING THAT THE DRAIN PLUG WAS LEAKING FOR A TIME. THE OIL BLOW BACK DOES NOT EXTEND PAST THE SUBFRAME IN A MEASURABLE AMOUNT.
THE OIL FILTER ITSELF IS WRITTEN ON AND APPEARS TO BE TIGHT AND NOT LEAKING. INSPECTOR NOTED THAT THE COOLANT HOSES GOING TO THE COOLER THAT IS PART OF THE OIL FILTER ADAPTER ARE SEEPING COOLANT. TECH REMOVED THE FILTER AND POURED THE CONTENTS OUT. INSPECTOR NOTED THAT THERE IS A SIGNIFICANT AMOUNT OF "GLITTER" IN THE OIL BUT NO LARGE PIECES SEEN.
WHILE THE VEHICLE WAS IN THE AIR, INSPECTOR LOOKED INTO THE TAILPIPE AND AT THE REAR BUMPER. THERE ARE NO INDICATIONS OF OIL BLOW OUT FROM THE PIPE AND NO OBVIOUS RESIDUE ON THE REAR OF THE VEHICLE AS WOULD BE EXPECTED IF THE ENGINE WAS BLOWING OIL OUT THE EXHAUST.
TECH PULLED CODES AND FOUND TWO UNRELATED CODES(SEE PHOTOS).
THE SHOP IS OF THE OPINION THAT THE ENGINE LEAKED/BLEW OUT THE OIL THAT WAS SUPPOSEDLY REPLACED BY THE VEHICLE OWNER. IF THE VEHICLE LOST 3 QUARTS OF OIL(5.1 INSTALLED BY THE SERVICING SHOP, THEN FOUR ADDED BY CUSTOMER WITH THE CURRENT LEVEL BEING ONE QUART OVERFULL, EQUALS 3 QUARTS LOST) BY WAY OF THE DRAIN PLUG AND/OR THE REAR MAIN SEAL, INSPECTOR BELIEVES THAT THERE WOULD BE MUCH MORE BLOW BACK ON THE UNDERCARRIAGE OF THE VEHICLE. ALSO, THE LACK OF BLOW OUT FROM THE TAILPIPE AND/OR THE REAR OF VEHICLE INDICATE THAT THERE IS NOT SIGNIFICANT LOSS THROUGH THE EXHAUST.
ANOTHER POSSIBILITY WOULD BE THAT THE ENGINE DIDN'T LOSE OIL AND THE CUSTOMER ONLY ADDED OIL AFTER THE ENGINE STARTED MAKING NOISE. THIS ENGINE PLATFORM IS KNOWN TO HAVE A CONSISTENT PROBLEM WITH ROD/MAIN BEARINGS. SO MUCH SO THAT THERE IS A RECALL FROM THE MANUFACTURER FOR ENGINE REPLACEMENT (GIVEN CERTAIN CRITERIA IS MET ON CERTAIN YEARS/MODELS). ONE POSSIBLE WAY TO DETERMINE IF THE ENGINE FAILURE WAS DUE TO OIL LOSS/LOSS OF PRESSURE WOULD BE TO INSPECT THE ROD/MAIN BEARINGS. IF ONLY ONE BEARING SHOWS TO BE FAILED, THEN IT WOULD INDICATE THAT IT WAS A PART FAILURE. IF THE VEHICLE LOST OIL/PRESSURE, THEN MULTIPLE BEARINGS WOULD SHOW DAMAGE. REMOVING THE OIL PAN TO ACCESS THE BEARINGS WOULD ALSO GIVE THE ABILITY TO INSPECT THE BOTTOM OF THE ENGINE FOR SIGNS OF SLUDGE AND/OR BUILD UP THAT WOULD INDICATE LACK OF MAINTENANCE.

VERIFIED INTERNAL ENIGNE FAILURE DUE TO AN UNKOWN CAUSE
Recommendations for Repair
CONTINUE TEARDOWN TO DETERMINE CAUSE AND EXTENT OF DAMAGE. ULTIMATELY THE ENGINE WILL NEED TO BE REPLACED.
