Failed Components and Extent of Damage
INSPECTOR ARRIVED FOR THE REINSPECTION AND THE UNIT WAS IN THE SHOP WITH THE TRANSFER CASE REMOVED. THIS IS THE 4484 CASE. WE NOTED THERE WAS METAL IN THE CASE AND THE GEARING HAD SOME WEAR WITH SLIGHT BURNING ON THE REAR AND FRONT SHAFT. THE PLANETARY GEARS HAD A LARGE AMOUNT OF METAL PRESENT. THE REMAINING FLUID WAS BLACK. THE CHAIN APPEARS LOOSE AND AN EXACT MEASUREMENT WAS NOT TAKEN. RF SHOWED THE AXLE WHICH HE STATED WAS DAMAGED. ON THE PRIOR INSPECTION THE AXLE SPUN FREELY WHEN IN GEAR. THE PINION APPEARED TO HAVE SOME BINDING BUT WAS NOT REMOVED FOR DAMAGE ASSESSMENT. THE FRONT DIFF HAD METAL IN THE CASE BUT NOT AS SEVERE AS THE T/CASE. RF REPLACED THE AXLE HE STATED TO DETERMINE IF THE PINION WAS BAD. THE RING GEAR HAD SOME WEAR BUT DONT SEEM SEVERE. RF STATED HE DID NOT SCAN THE VEHICLE BUT NO CODES OR CEL WERE PRESENT WHEN WE HAD THE VEHICLE STARTED. RF HAS NO CLEAR CAUSE OF FAILURE. THIS IS WHAT HE STATED HE WANTS TO REPLACE THE DIFF AND THE T CASE.

THERE ARE OVERSIZED TIRES ON THE VEHICLE WHICH WOULD BE A CONTRIBUTING FACTOR OF ACCELERATED WEAR OF COMPONENTS AND SOME FLUID WAS PRESENT. IT DOES NOT APPEAR IT WAS RUN LOW ON FLUID AND THERE WERE NO LEAKS NOTED. BOTH UNITS WERE NOT FULLY DISASSEMBLED AND NO ACTUAL FAILED COMPONENT WAS SHOWN. FURTHER DIAG AND TEARDOWN ARE REQUIRED TO DETERMINE WHAT FAILED.
