Failed Components and Extent of Damage
ENGINE: VEHICLE WAS TOWED IN, ENGINE WAS NOT ABLE TO RUN AT THE TIME. THE SHOP DID NOT RECORD ANY FAULTS, BATTERY IS DISCONNECTED. LEFT BANK HEAD IS REMOVED, ALONG WITH THE OIL PAN. THE SHOP RECOVERED 4 QUARTS OF DIRTY, BLACK OIL, FULLY METAL CONTAMINATED. THE #5 PISTON HAD COME APART, AND AS THE ROD WAS STILL CONNECTED TO THE CRANKSHAFT, THE SMALL END WITH THE PIN DAMAGED THE CYLINDER BORE. THE ROD BEARING WAS DESTROYED, WITH PARTICLES STILL FRICTION WELDED TO THE CRANK JOURNAL. THE CYLINDER HEAD WAS DAMAGED FROM THE BROKEN PARTS OF THE PISTON. THE CONN ROD IS NOT BENT-NO EVIDENCE OF HYDROLOCK. THE ENGINE CRANKSHAFT IS BINDING IN THE BLOCK, CAN BE TURNED, BUT VERY STIFF. NO VISIBLE SLUDGE IN THE BOTTOM END, THE PAN IS FULL OF FINE METALLIC PARTICLES, ALONG WITH THE LARGER PIECES OF PISTON. IT APPEARS THAT THE ENGINE WAS STILL RUNNING, WHEN IT SPUN THE #5 CONN ROD BEARING, BUT THE CLIENT CONTINUED OPERATION IN THAT DAMAGED STATE UNTIL TOTAL ENGINE FAILURE WAS EXPERIENCED. #5 PLUG IS DAMAGED FROM BROKEN PISTON BITS, AS IS THE #5 CHAMBER IN THE HEAD, WITH THE VALVES BENT
MATERIAL FAILRUE OF THE #5 CONNECTING ROD BEARING , WITH CONTINUED OPERATION UNTIL THE ROD BROKE OUT OF THE PISTON WITH ADDITIONAL DAMAGES TO THE BLOCK AND CYLINDER HEAD
