Failed Components and Extent of Damage
THE #5 CONNECTING ROD IS BROKEN OUT OF THE PISTON AND IS JAMMED IN THE #6 CYLINDER BETWEEN THE CRANKSHAFT AND #6 CONNECTING ROD. THE #6 PISTON IS IN PIECES IN THE OIL PAN AND THE ROD IS BENT BUT STILL CONNECTED TO CRANKSHAFT. THE #6 ROD BEARING DOES NOT APPEAR SPUN. THERE IS IMPACT TO THE BLOCK FROM THE BROKEN ROD. THE #5 ROD CAP FOR THE CONNECTING ROD IS IN THE OIL PAN AND IS IN WHOLE CONDITION. THERE IS ALSO A BROKEN ROD BOLT AND THE BEARING IS IN THE PAN FOLDED OVER AND DISTORTED. THERE IS NO SCORING ON THE INSIDE OF THE ROD CAP FROM THE BEARING BEING SPUN. NO SIGNS OF IMPACT TO THE CYLINDER HEAD COMBUSTION CHAMBERS OF THE DAMAGED CYLINDERS. THE VALVES AND VALVE SEATS ARE INTACT. NO SIGNS OF FAILED VALVE SPRINGS OR VALVE TRAIN COMPONENTS. THE ENGINE IS CLEAN, NO SLUDGE OR VARNISH.
NO EVIDENCE OF LACK OF LUBE OR OVERHEAT. NO EVIDENCE OF LACK OF MAINTENANCE.
ENGINE HAS EXTENSIVE DAMAGE MAKING THE ROOT CAUSE DIFFICULT TO DETERMINE. IT APPEARS THERE WAS A FAILURE OF THE #5 CONNECTING ROD BOLT WITH CONTINUED OPERATION AT A HIGH RATE OF SPEED UNTIL THE ROD HAMMERED OUT OF THE PISTON, BROKE OFF THE CRANKSHAFT AND JAMMED INTO THE #6 CYLINDER BREAKING THE PISTON AND IMPACTING THE BLOCK.
