Failed Components and Extent of Damage
TECH DEMONSTRATED AND I VERIFIED.
THE ENGINE OIL FILTER HOUSING AND DRAIN PLUG ARE TIGHT AND ARE NOT LEAKING. AT MY REQUEST THE TECH REMOVED THE ENGINE OIL FILTER AND THE PLASTIC OIL FILTER HOUSING SEALS AND FILTER ARE IN FAIR CONDITION WITH NO FAILURES. THE ENGINE DOES NOT HAVE AN OIL DIPSTICK AND AT MY REQUEST THE TECH DRAINED THE ENGINE OIL AND AN ESTIMATED 6 LITERS OF OIL WAS COLLECTED. THE CRANKSHAFT PULLEY TURNS EASILY USING A 2 FOOT LONG RATCHET. THE SERPENTINE BELT IS SHREDDED AND REMAINING PIECES OF BELT ARE NOT STICKY OR GUMMY AND DO NOT APPEAR TO HAVE BEEN EXPOSED TO ENGINE OIL. ENGINE OIL HAS LEAKED ONTO THE FRONT OF THE ENGINE AND HAS BLOWN BACK ALONG THE VEHICLE UNDERBODY AND THE FRONT CRANK SEAL MAY HAVE FAILED FROM ENGINE BELT FAILURE. BELT FAILURE AND DAMAGE TO THE FRONT CRANK SEAL IS COMMON FOR THIS MODEL BMW ENGINE. ENGINE OIL IS ALSO LEAKING FROM THE RIGHT REAR CORNER OF THE ENGINE LIKELY VALVE COVER GASKET FAILURE.
NO OTHER FAILURES SEEN OR DEMONSTRATED.
ENGINE OIL DOES NOT APPEAR TO HAVE REACHED A CRITICALLY LOW LEVEL. MATERIAL FAILURE OF ENGINE BELT HAS LIKELY DAMAGED THE FRONT CRANK SEAL. THERE ARE NO FAILURES SEEN OR DEMONSTRATED TO THE DRAIN PLUG OR FRONT CRANK SEAL. NO EVIDENCE OF DAMAGE RELATED TO THE SERVICE PERFORMED
Recommendations for Repair
RECOMMEND REMOVE CRANK PULLEY AND INSPECT FRONT SEAL AND REPAIR AS NECESSARY.
